Kaleigh Moore has been published by the likes of Copyhackers, Sumo Me, and Inc. Magazine. She summarizes her freelance work and career by saying that she writes blog content for e-commerce platforms and the software that integrates with them. She’s a big Office fan, and passionate about supporting women in freelance and advocating for equal pay.
From barista to dishwasher to PR manager, she has had several jobs which led her to where she is now, each teaching her what she was looking for in a career.
Why Blogs?
Blogs help e-commerce and software companies achieve key objectives.
“SEO is a big one, obviously. They are targeting keywords and blog content is an easy way to work along SEO efforts or even PPC campaigns if they’re trying to target specific keywords. That’s very specific and blogging is very complementary to those efforts.”
In addition, blogs are also excellent avenues to achieve other important objectives including educational, how-to content and add value.
Building a Business
Kaleigh spends 75% of her time on client work and 25% on building her business through her two newsletters (Kaleigh Moore and the Yeah Write Club), freelance coaching, and the Creative Class Podcast with Paul Jarvis about the business side of freelancing.
Becoming a copywriter happened organically. Kaleigh shares how a well-established content creator reached out to her over Twitter to compliment her on her Etsy jewelry shop. They struck up a connection and she later hired Kaleigh. This eventually led her into the e-commerce space where she found her niche.
“I think if you find the right community and you start building connections with people it happens pretty organically… you find your place within whatever niche you decide to pursue.”
Networking
Kaleigh says that relationships are the core of everything in business. It’s about connecting with the right people and finding your place. While being in a rural place can make this challenging, this is exactly why she makes time to go to events like Content Jam.
Kaleigh’s Networking Tips:
- Treat people the way you want to be treated.
- Be nice.
- Be friendly.
- Be open.
- Stay positive.
Her newsletter is a place where she likes to connect with her subscribers and share these tips, experiences, and what she has learned building her business.
“The secret is to survey your existing audience. And I didn’t learn that until about a year in, but I started sending out surveys and I literally just asked people who were on the list already ‘What do you want me to teach you next? What things do you like that I’ve written about already? What do you want to see more of?’”
Challenge:
Make time to learn something new every day. It will have huge, long-term rewards.
